| This castle boasts an ancient history including some very important Roman families, such as former owners Pope Paul V Borghese and Pope Leone XII della Genga, who determined its style. Its current owner, the architect Earl Dario del Bufalo has maintained the property in excellent condition thanks to the great passion that led him to personally oversee the impressive renovations. | |

| The castle was mentioned for the first time in a bill by Onorio III Savelli of 1217, which mentions a property named “Piliocti vel Cicomola” and states that it was owned by the Sant’Alessio monastery on the Aventino Hill. In 1458 the Capizucchi family sold the property to cardinal Bessarione. | |

| In 1617 cardinal Scipione Caffarelli Borghese, nephew of pope Paul V, bought it from Maffeo Barberini, the future pope Urbano VIII. During this time the Borghese family supervised important renovations to the property, which were carried out in 1618 and 1619 by various tradesmen, when Paul V decided to redevelop the area and turn it into a summer resort. | |
