MARCHESI LONGHI DE PAOLIS CASTLE

Extra Lux

Address: Fumone -  map

The Fumone Castle (10th century) has ancient origins. It is 80km from Rome and is located in a village on a hill surrounded by woods and mountains. The silence, medieval atmosphere, gastronomy and hospitality are the main characteristics of Fumone, and they fascinate all people who visit this town. Thanks to its strategic position overlooking the Sacco Valley, the village used to warn people with smoke signals of the invasion of enemies trying to conquer Rome from the south.

The castle is situated in the middle of the fortress, surrounded by walls and armed with its own defence system. Inside there are many spotting towers, the residence of the charge of the Pope and his family and the prisons for the enemies of the Church. Nowadays, this medieval village houses a small community of friendly people who live in a maze of houses built within the walls, where time seems to have stopped. Fumone is a great point of interest, far from chaos of the city. The houses surrounding the fortress used to be warehouses, craftsmen’s workshops, stables, bird coops and deposits of arms. There also used to be many vegetable gardens that were necessary in the case of siege. The Fumone fortress itself used to house only soldiers, craftsmen, farmers and whoever could help defend the town, as well as, of course, the prisoners in the castle.

The highest hanging garden in Europe (among those built with the Babylon system) was created above the castle, 800 mt above sea level, with a 360° view which dominates over 40 cities and castles. The hanging garden was built in 1600 in the vaults of the walkways of the guards and in every space among the numerous internal towers and between the moat and the external walls. When Nicolò IV passed away on April 4, 1292, the conclave took a long time to elect the new Pope, having to choose between the two most important families of Rome: the Colonna and the Orsini. Finally, two years later in Perugia, they made their election. In the hopes of the arrival of an “Angelic Shepherd” of a pope, one of a holy lifestyle that could reform the church and bring back evangelical purity, the cardinals determined to elect the hermit Pietro del Morrone (elected July 5, 1294), who took the name of Celestino V, as pope. The emotion filled conclave finally created an “inspired” election, crowning the pope on on August 29, 1294 in L’Aquila.

The story of Pope Celestino V is well renowned, having been secretly transferred by Bonifacio VIII to the Fumone fortress by six knights and thirty soldiers. On May 19, 1296, after ten months spent in prison, the Pope died. His cell (which now is protected by marquises Longhi de Paolis and adored by thousands of devoted people every year) forced him to rest his head on the same place where he placed his feet when celebrating the mass. When Pope Celestino V passed away, a marvel of extraordinary dimensions occurred in the Fumone castle, which, according to those reporting the story, indicatedthe death of the Saint: a shining cross appeared and hung in the air over the door of the cell where the Pope slept and was imprisoned. This marvel was witnessed by many people, who spoke of it during the canonization process, ordered by Pope Clemente V in 1313. Within a few days, the body of Pope Celestino V will be transferred from the Basilica of Collemaggio to the Marchesi Longhi de Paolis Castle.
